Kathrina "I Love Life And I Want To Do It All"

First Name: Kathrina
Age: 27
Sign: Sagittarius
I grew up in: Covina, CA
I currently live in: Belmont Shore, CA
Occupation: Contract administration in the telecom industry
You can find me: Spending time with my family and friends enjoying life
You will never find me: Eating meat, forgiving intolerance, or without an opinion
Your website or Charity you are passionate about: I have been a volunteer with School on Wheels (www. schoolonwheels. org) for over a year, and have an amazing student named Hailey who I meet with at least once a week. She and her mother are such an inspiration! The program makes a tremendous difference in the lives of these homeless children, providing not only consistency often otherwise lacking in their routines, but a real chance for them to develop a love of learning that will continue to benefit them for the rest of their lives. What I love about this program is that it’s not just a hand out. In addition to providing school supplies and uniforms, SOW tutors act as mentors and form a relationship with the families, the student’s teachers, and shelters to really provide an opportunity for children to develop a strong foundation in education that will help them break the cycle of homelessness.

1.) What (person, goal, dream) gets you out of bed each day? The prospect of new challenges, making a difference, learning or experiencing something new… And on those days I really don’t want to get out of bed to go to work, I remember how lucky I am to have a job I enjoy in today’s economy. That usually does the trick.

2.) What life experience has strengthened you the most? Growing up, I was not particularly close to my father. My grandfather on my mother’s side really filled the dad role in my life. His passing ten years ago forced me to reevaluate my priorities and reconsider my focus. It was truly life changing, and I attribute the independence and motivation I have today to my desire to fulfill the commitments I made to myself then.

3.) What would you want to change about yourself? I would a little more like to be more like my mother – more generous, more patient, more gracious. We’re all a work in progress though, right? I think the great thing about this life, the thing that I find so encouraging, is that every day is an opportunity to right wrongs, to continue to grow, and to become slightly better people if we learn from our mistakes and the examples of those around us.

4.) What do you want to do before you die?
My “bucket list” is a long one, but I am proud of what I’ve already crossed off so far. I love life, and I want to do it all! So here’s the condensed version… I want to continue to travel and experience additional world cultures and traditions. I want to continue to improve my Spanish and Italian, and learn Greek (the language of my father’s family). I want to have a family. I want to be more involved in the politics of my community, and play a more active role in ending intolerance and hate, so that my future children won’t know the bigotry so many dear to me have suffered. I think I could go on for pages, but I was told to keep this short. :)

5.) What is your most prized possession? My grandfather’s Purple Heart medal from WWII

Holly "I've Always Wanted To Be A Mom"

You will never find me: Willingly watching a scary movie
Charity I’m passionate about: Ronald McDonald House

Life Long Dream:
To be a mommy. I have 2 pups but I’ve always wanted to have a child, the 2 legged kind. From the time I was a little girl, I’ve always wanted to be a mom.

What am I passionate about:
I am passionate about equal rights for everybody. I believe the decision of whom one chooses to love shouldn’t have conditions and clearance to benefit from something and someone else not having that due to the person they love.

How do I measure success:
I measure success by the amount of love I have in my life. The quality of friends and family that support me in everything I do. Plus 2 of the cutest little pup pups in the world. A good friend once opened my eyes to feeling like a millionaire. He told me, how he wakes up to his beautiful wife every morning, has 3 beautiful daughters, has a beautiful family, a roof over his head and friends that he cherishes. That’s what makes him feel like a millionaire.

What has been my greatest achievement:
My greatest achievement has been losing 90 lbs a little over a decade ago. I grew up a normal size baby, but then when the parents divorced with I was 7, I turned to food as my comfort. I continued to gain weight throughout my adolescence and teenage years. I peeked at 232 lbs! In my early twenties I told myself enough is enough and decided to change things and a little over a year later, I had lost 90+ lbs and have successfully kept it all off!!!

Would I change anything if I could go back in time:
You know, I really hate this question, because the p/c answer is no, I wouldn’t be the person I am, blah, blah, blah! Which don’t get me wrong, I believe you become who you are through what you’ve went through. But if I could go back in time and change something, yah, I’d change the fact that I picked up smoking! I don’t know if things would be different, but if I knew that I quitting 12 years later would be so hard, I’d hope I’d be strong enough to now pick it up!

I'm inspired by life, period. The following is a short list of people or things that can inspire me: friends, strangers, nature, my yoga teachers, people with disabilities, anyone battling a serious illness, random acts of kindness and compassion, lovers of life, words, music, dancers, philosophers, movies, art... well, you get the picture.

2) What would you want to change about yourself:
The one thing I would like to change about myself would be to stop being hard on myself. Sometimes I just need to "chill out." That's one of the many reasons I practice yoga.

My friends would describe me as someone who is affectionate and enjoys to laugh!

Your website or Charity you are passionate about: My former employer, Spokane AIDS Network, at www.san-nw.org.

1.) Who has been the most influential person in your life? Hands down, my dad. For good and for bad reasons. He is the reason it took me so long to come out to myself and my family. He is the reason I am so hard on myself. He is the reason I never think I am good enough. But yet, he is the reason that I am blessed financially, that I am able to do what I want to do when I want to do it, that I have been able to dedicate myself to causes about which I am so passionate. I have inherited his leadership ability, his strong personality, and his strong nose. :?) But not his politics, thank goodness.

2.) What would you want to change about yourself? I took the Myers-Brigg personality test and I came back as an ISTJ. Introvert, Sensing, Thinking, Judging. I am way inside my head and I wish that was not the case. Sometimes those things are freaky right on.

3.) Is there something you would do differently if you could go back in time? I would take my education far more seriously. I majored in Computer Science for a time in college and was scary good at it, but flunked out of Calculus II because I partied too much. That was 1983, on the brink of the PC revolution. I could have been there with it, riding the wave. But instead, I chose to piss it away and graduated with a degree in Journalism. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

4.) How do you measure success? I measure success and wealth not by a bank account, but by the breadth and scope of friendships, familial relationships, romantic relationships, and the amount of time and energy one gives back to her community. In that regard, I consider myself successful.

5.) What is your most prized possession? If a pet can be considered a possession, then it would be my dear sweet Bella. She is my two-year-old golden retriever and I have never known what it meant to consider your pet as your child until I had her. She brings me joy, laughter, frustration and companionship. Who needs a girlfriend? LOL

3.)What has been your greatest loss in life? maybe the loss of nurturing in my family? when i think of more concrete losses in my life, i tend to think of things like the death of my grandmother, who was my primary nurturing figure or being in an orphanage for the first month of my life. those concrete examples probably speak to a vaguer sense in my family that everyone moves around in their own separate bubbles, touching but not too much.

4.)Who would you like to meet? alice walker, bell hooks, thich nhat hahn, andrea gibson

5.)What is the hardest part of your day? What is the best part of your day? the hardest part of my day is at work, when i and several other really caring people cannot find a way to help a child or teen in foster care move through her trauma and pain to a place where she feels safe and loved. and the best part is the opposite, when i see that a child or teen has found a way, with adult loving support, to create a new path for themselves. a path where they accept love and honor and generate love and self confidence in return.

You can find me: at www.myspace.com/tammyallens
You will never find me: in clown school
Your website or Charity you are passionate about: http://bradlisti.com/ and planned parenthood, the homeless, animals.

1.) What (person, goal, dream) gets you out of bed each day?
Not much. I hate getting up. My daughter is my most important person in my life. She is why I get up.

2.) What life experience has strengthened you the most?
Surviving sexual abuse as a teen made me very fragile but having my daughter has made me infinitely stronger.

3.) What would you want to change about yourself?
My tendency towards apathy. I have tremendous capacity for passion but tapping it is often difficult. I’m often surprised when passion bubbles up from a sunset or the desert. Living is extraordinary, I don’t like to think about it too much cuz I freak myself out about it.

4.) What do you want to do before you die?Everything. Go to Italy. There are a lot of reckless things I didn’t accomplish before I had my daughter. Now I wouldn’t risk leaving her for the experience of jumping out of a plane or something like that.

5.) What is your most prized possession?
Nothing. I hate owning things. I guess family photographs are the only irreplaceable things in the world.

Audrey "Luckiest Mommy"

Name: Audrey
Age: 37
Sign: Libra
I grew up in: Greenville, SC
I currently live in: Greenville, SC
Occupation: Massage Therapist
You can find me at the park with my kid
You will never find me on a roller coaster
I am passionate about: St. Jude's

1. My dream job would be to have a photography studio of my own in which I capture children in both a formal portrait setting as well as outside in a more natural setting. I have been so inspired by children and think that it would be a great job. I enjoy taking photographs and wish I could build on my confidence so that I would have the courage to open my own studio. I have been told that I have the talent, but unfortunately am unable to plunge into my dream job due to a looming lack of confidence.

2. Without a doubt, I am most proud of my daughter and being a mommy. Three years ago, she was born in a town in Texas and her birth-mother took a chance on us as being her child's adoptive parents. I am thrilled to be her mommy and am amazed by her daily. Every night I tell her she is the best kid in the whole wide world and I tell her I am the luckiest mommy in the whole wide world. Not a day goes by that I don't tell her how fortunate I am to be her mommy. I feel that I was given the best gift and often times my heart does not feel large enough to hold the love I have for my daughter. She is by far my greatest accomplishment.

3. Loosing my grandmother eleven years ago has to be the greatest loss that I have suffered. She helped raise me and was my other light, besides my daughter. She and I were a team much the way my daughter and I are and to loose her was devastating to me. My father's death seemed to pale in comparison to that of my grandmother's. We just had a special bond that has only been replicated with my daughter. Even to this day, I sometimes go to grab the phone to call Mimi, but almost instantly the twinge of pain in my stomach reminds me that she is no longer here.

4. I would like to meet so many people but am painfully shy and fear that I could not say anything interesting or original that would warrant the conversation continuing. I have been inspired by so many musicians over the years and would love to pick Ani Difranco's brain.

5. The hardest part of my day when I am tired would have to be putting my daughter to bed. It often is a lengthy process and when I am tired, it is sometimes difficult. The best part is seeing her eyes looking at me when she wakes up in the morning or when she runs to me after I come home from work. There is nothing better than her sweet glance and starting the day over and experiencing first hand the wonderment of a child.
